Emerge
This project is an architectural design proposal for an architecture and urban library located in Moqattam Hills, Cairo. The site can be considered a premium location for such an institution, given the area’s layered history of development in the art of building and its commanding panoramic views over monuments from multiple eras of Cairo’s architectural evolution.
The building was conceived to reflect the state of architecture and urban planning today, distinct in expression and technique from the work of past builders, yet grounded in enduring principles, ideals, and spatial understandings that continue to shape the discipline. The design acknowledges this continuity by translating historical sensibilities into a contemporary architectural language.
Formally, the project draws strong inspiration from the sharpness and fissured aesthetics of the surrounding mountain landscape. The massing and envelope articulate a system of cuts, planes, and fractures that echo the geology of Moqattam Hills, a plateau district overlooking central Cairo, approximately 7–10 km southeast of Downtown Cairo. At the same time, the concept of framing views becomes central to the spatial experience: openings and sectional voids are strategically positioned to capture, isolate, and recompose vistas of Cairo’s architectural fabric. Through this framing strategy, the library offers both a separated and integrated visualization of the city, encouraging visitors to engage critically and contemplatively with Cairo’s built environment across time.
